Substract borders inside a gallery

Is there any tutorial how to substract an area inside a gallery (creating borders inside)... I tried with substract but it connects somehow with gallery corners...
Do you have some advice / tips?

Keep the two object (the one that define the 'external border' and the one that substract something') completely separated but with the same cave/branch.
Something like in attachment...
